Dana: The Pali Word for Generosity

Awakening Truth has adopted the practice of “Dana” (giving) as both a spiritual practice and a practical way to meet the financial needs of the learning center. Dana is a Pali word for generosity. Throughout Buddhist history, spiritual teachings have been offered to people free of charge. This practice links the community of teachers, students, and centers through the spirit of generosity.

Our registration policy for events is sliding scale. No one refused. Your donation will help us to provide scholarships to events for those who need it.

Dana as a Spiritual Practice

As a spiritual practice, generosity invites us to explore the effects of giving and receiving freely. Every participant is asked to reflect both on the joy of receiving the teachings, being part of community as well on having a place to meet. The sign of skillful practice of generosity is when it brings greater and greater awareness to the process of giving and receiving, when it connects us to our own goodness and helps us to cut through our mind when it is consumed by fear, greed and aversion.

There is no wrong way of practicing generosity. Mindfulness provides the necessary mental space to recognize and act on our generous intentions. This is often not an easy practice. At times we feel uncomfortable because we think that we did not give enough or that we gave too much. When these doubts arise we are encouraged to turn towards mindfulness. Only when we listen deeply can we discover an appropriate level of support.

Dana and Awakening Truth’s Activities

Awakening Truth as an organization and Learning Center exists only because of people’s generosity. We can be inspired by the great history of giving from the example of the Buddha on down to the people in our own community here as well as the practice, efforts, and resources over the years from people all over the country and in other countries that supported us to be able to gather here today.

What is being offered here, today, is only due the to the generosity of those in the past. We do not provide a suggested donation, but instead ask that community members reflect on how they might support this place, our community and these teachings in a way that brings joy and happiness.

Giving is Tax Deductable

All donations to Awakening Truth are tax deductible. All donations by check are recorded and contributors will receive and acknowledgment at the end of the year for tax purposes. This way of supporting each other is meant to be a source of joy and connection, an essential step in awakening the heart of freedom. Please feel free to ask questions and offer feedback. This is a creative process and we expect that our understanding of generosity will deepen as we continue to practice and talk together.
